While greenhouse investment is one of the most profitable areas of modern agriculture, it is a process with no room for error due to high initial costs. A successful greenhouse operation is possible not only by constructing a good structure but by planning correctly from the very beginning.
The Foundation Must Be Solid This is the most irreversible step of the project. The land's sunlight duration and orientation are critical for yield. The slope of the land directly affects construction costs and drainage. Most importantly, proximity to an uninterrupted and high-quality water source is indispensable. A detailed soil analysis must be performed before investment.
Climate-Appropriate Structure Not every greenhouse can be established everywhere. It must demonstrate full compliance with the regional climate. The construction materials (glass, polycarbonate, plastic tunnel, etc.) and the ratio of ventilation openings to be used in a region with heavy snow load in winter versus a hot coastal strip must be completely different. Incorrect design means high energy costs.
Ideal Environment for Plants Plants require ideal internal conditions regardless of the weather outside. Selecting the right heating system for the region (geothermal, solid fuel, natural gas, etc.), cooling for summer months (such as fan-pad systems), and humidity control to prevent fungal diseases are essential. The efficient operation of all these systems is possible with a good automation infrastructure.
The Lifeline A greenhouse means intensive water usage. Not only the quantity of water but also the water quality (EC and pH values) is very important. Drip or sprinkler irrigation systems suitable for the product should be selected, and a drainage system to remove excess water for plant health must definitely be included in the project.
The Logic of Investment This is the step that must be approached mathematically, not emotionally. Not only the initial investment cost but also operating expenses such as energy, labor, and fertilizers must be calculated correctly. This calculation reveals the return on investment (ROI) period, showing whether the project is logical.
Who Will You Sell To? The last but most important question: What will you produce, and who will you sell it to? Products with regional or international market demand should be selected, the appropriate growing technique (soil/soilless) determined, and the logistics infrastructure planned for the product to reach the market.
