Carbon dioxide is one of the most important factors influencing plant growth in greenhouses. During photosynthesis, plants rely heavily on CO₂, and when the concentration in the environment is insufficient, growth slows dramatically. For this reason, CO₂ enrichment systems have become a key strategy in modern greenhouse production. Proper CO₂ management accelerates plant growth, increases yield potential and maximizes photosynthetic efficiency.
The natural CO₂ concentration inside a greenhouse is typically around 400 ppm. When this value is increased to 800–1200 ppm through controlled supplementation, plants enter a far more productive photosynthesis phase. Crops such as lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers show significant growth improvements under elevated CO₂ levels. Leaves expand more, root systems strengthen and flowering tends to be more uniform and consistent.
CO₂ enrichment can be applied using compressed gas cylinders, liquid CO₂ tanks or controlled combustion generators. The choice depends on the size of the greenhouse, ventilation capacity and production model. The most important requirement is achieving uniform CO₂ distribution. Insufficient air circulation may cause CO₂ to accumulate in certain zones while leaving other areas underserved, making proper ventilation and fan placement essential.
Timing is equally critical. Because plants only photosynthesize in the presence of light, CO₂ should be supplied only during daylight hours. Nighttime enrichment offers no benefit. Additionally, temperature and humidity must be kept within the ideal range—typically 20–26°C with 60–75% relative humidity—for CO₂ to be efficiently absorbed. These balanced conditions maximize the impact of CO₂ on photosynthesis.
Ventilation management plays a crucial role during enrichment. Excessive ventilation causes CO₂ to escape quickly, reducing efficiency. For this reason, ventilation is minimized during CO₂ application, though humidity must still be controlled to prevent excessive buildup. Automation systems make this process easier by continuously monitoring CO₂ levels and activating or deactivating injection systems when necessary.
When applied correctly, CO₂ enrichment becomes one of the most powerful tools for increasing greenhouse productivity. It enhances photosynthesis, accelerates plant development and supports denser foliage and fruit growth. When combined with precise climate and nutrient management, CO₂ systems help deliver stronger, faster and higher-quality crop production.
