Among modern agricultural techniques, especially for the production of leafy greens like lettuce, mint, and basil, the NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) system is one of the most popular and efficient methods. Often referred to as "Flowing Water Culture," this method is one of the most elegant and effective applications of soilless agriculture.
So, what exactly is this NFT system that allows plants to grow rapidly without soil, using only water and nutrients, and by what mechanism does it work? This system merges plant biology with engineering discipline to create a perfect balance of oxygen and nutrients in the root zone, maximizing growth speed and crop quality.
NFT is a hydroponic growing method where plant roots are in contact with a continuously flowing, very shallow layer (film) of nutrient-rich water instead of soil. This method utilizes the dynamic movement of water to maximize the metabolic rate of the plant.
The basic structure is as follows: Plants sit inside perforated net pots placed on slightly inclined PVC channels. The plant's roots hang down from these pots toward the bottom of the channel, where a very thin layer of water containing dissolved minerals flows continuously, much like a film strip.
The most critical aspect of this method is the water depth. The roots are not fully submerged; only the tips touch the flowing water. This ensures that while the upper parts of the roots receive ample oxygen from the air, the lower parts are continuously hydrated. This perfect equilibrium allows plants to grow significantly faster than in traditional soil-based methods.
The NFT system operates on a closed-loop "circulation cycle" principle where water and nutrients are never wasted. The process takes place in three main strategic stages to ensure sustainable production:
The heart of the system is the main nutrient tank and the water pump. The pump continuously pushes the nutrient-rich water to the highest point of the growing channels. During this stage, automation systems precisely monitor and adjust the EC (Electrical Conductivity) and pH levels to ensure the plant receives the exact mineral profile required.
The channels are mounted with a slight slope to utilize gravity. The water flows from the start to the end of the channel as a thin film. During this journey, the roots of the plants effortlessly absorb the water and nutrients they need from this moving film, which also helps prevent the stagnation and bacterial growth often found in still-water systems.
Water reaching the end of the channel that has not been used by the plants returns to the main nutrient tank via a drain pipe. Here, the water is re-oxygenated, and the cycle begins again. This closed-loop structure reduces water consumption by up to 90% compared to traditional irrigation, making it a highly eco-friendly production model.
In summary, the NFT system is a high-efficiency, water-saving, and sustainable agricultural technology. It is one of the most strategic investments for increasing profitability and ensuring standardized crop quality in modern greenhouse farming.
